The Fallen Fruit duo has created a permanent site-specific installation for the Accademia Carrara

The California-based duo Fallen Fruit has created a permanent site-specific installation inspired by the museum's collections and the city ahead of the reopening of Bergamo's completely renovated Accademia Carrara.

TheCarrara Academy in Bergamo is preparing for its January 28, 2023 reopening, completely renovatedin preparation for Bergamo and Brescia Italian Capital of Culture 2023, with the creation of a permanent site-specific installation inspired by the museum’s collections but also by the city itself, its streets and nature.

Titled Sacred Conversations, the installation is the work of California-based art duo Fallen Fruit, composed of David Allen Burns and Austin Young. “It’s a contemporary portrait, in this case not of a person, but expressing the feeling of a place,” Burns said. “We spent a lot of time exploring the city, starting in Carrara and ending in the Upper Town. Inspiration came from the museum’s collections, but also from elements taken from the places we encountered on our journey through the city.”

“The stairs became a kind of frame for our work, which continues seamlessly to the top floor,” Young added. “When we return to Bergamo in January, before the opening, we will work on the elevator, a metaphor for the body moving on this path toward the light, from the bottom to the top.”

The work spans more than 600 square meters, in the spaces of the stairs andelevator that connect the floors: the walls have been covered with a special film on which are depicted flowers, fruit, pictorial details, animals and other elements that the duo has encountered on the streets of Bergamo and in the halls of the museum.

The installation will be finished for the opening of the new exhibit.
