The Sanna Museum in Sassari reopens its doors. It will be a living museum, more modern and more accessible

After nearly four years of work, the Sanna Museum in Sassari has reopened its doors to the public thanks to a temporary arrangement. Major renovation and fitting out works aimed at the reorganization and redevelopment of spaces and visiting routes.

After nearly four years of work, the “Giovanni Antonio Sanna” National Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Sassari was reopened on Aug. 3, in the presence of the director of the Regional Directorate for Museums Sardinia Luana Toniolo, museum director Elisabetta Grassi, regional secretary Patricia Olivo and general director Museums Massimo Osanna.

The reopening was made possible thanks to the creation of a temporary installation, which affected several rooms of the museum structure and was accomplished by the Regional Directorate Museums Sardinia as part of a broader plan to upgrade the museum, with which spaces and visitor routes are being upgraded in a modern and functional way. The museum displays exhibits ranging from prehistoric to Roman, ethnographic to Phoenician-Punic collections.

Thanks to a redevelopment project overseen by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture of Sardinia and begun in 2016, the Dessì collection, which presents a complete panorama of Sardinia’s archaeological history, is also now on display in its entirety in the main room of the Castoldi Pavilion.

Numerous initiatives will be launched with the involvement of schools, nonprofit associations and universities, for co-programming and co-planning of the museum’s future activities, so that it becomes an increasingly participatory and inclusive space.

"It will be a living museum, more cognitively accessible as well, and it will be open to the contemporary," anticipated director Elisabetta Grassi.

From August 4 to September 3, 2022, the museum will be open during the following hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Closed on Sundays and Mondays.
