On Tuesday, Dec. 28, Sabine Weiss, French-Swiss photographer, passed away at the age of 97 at her home in Paris. Born July 23, 1924, in Saint-Gingolph, she is considered thelast representative of French humanist photography: she had outlived Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis, Edouard Boubat, Brassaï and Izis, with whom she had shared her path.
In her production Weiss was able to portray the condition of ordinary people in the French capital. He also made portraits of artists such as the famous cellist Pablo Casals and French painter Fernand Leger and composers Benjamin Britten and Igor Stravinsij.
A major solo exhibition dedicated to her was already scheduled at the Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice, for which Sabine Weiss herself had opened her archives in Paris. So the first international tribute will open to the public on March 11, 2022. Curated by Virginie Chardin, the exhibition will present more than two hundred works and important archival documents, bearing witness to the career of the photographer, the only woman to represent the French humanist school.
