Ferrara, Spazio Antonioni will be born, dedicated to the famous Oscar-winning director

An exhibition space dedicated to the famous Oscar-winning director Michelangelo Antonioni will be created in Ferrara. Work is scheduled to be completed in 2024, 110 years after the director's birth.

An exhibition space dedicated to the famous Oscar-winning director Michelangelo Antonioni (Ferrara, 1912 - Rome, 2007) will rise in Ferrara on the 110th anniversary of his birth. It will be in the Pavilion of Contemporary Art (PAC) in Corso Porta Mare, 5.

The design of the new space was approved on September 7 by a determination of manager Natascia Frasson. A bidding process for the work is scheduled to take place by October, with awarding expected by December 31, with work scheduled to begin in mid-January 2023. Full completion of work is expected by spring 2024. Promoters of the initiative are, with the city administration, Ferrara Arte Foundation President Vittorio Sgarbi and Enrica Fico, who was Antonioni’s wife. Curator is Dominique Païni, former director of the Cinémathèque française. Païni previously curated the exhibition Antonioni and the Arts, which was held in 2013 in the Palazzo dei Diamanti and then exported to Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

It will be “an authentic ’exhibition machine’ that will be born under the sign of the art and legacy of our famous director,” stressed Ferrara City Council Culture Councillor Marco Gulinelli.

The Spazio Antonioni project, soon to be presented to the public, bears the signature of a team composed of the Alvisi-Kirimoto studio, the Ates company and municipal architect Rossella Bizzi. The single project manager will be the city’s engineer, Paolo Rebecchi. The new Spazio Antonioni will be accessed from the ground floor of the PAC through a reception hall. From here the public will be able to walk through internal paths visiting all the sections. On the ground floor there will be an area with display walls and showcases, which will display memorabilia, works, documents, and photos. On the second floor will be extremely flexible spaces, with panels that can be oriented and variously positioned, so that different conformations can be defined: workshop rooms, a large event space, a projection room, other exhibition areas. On the two floors blackout and acoustic curtains will separate the projection rooms.
In addition, the project includes the reopening of the two windows facing the outdoor green area, placing the visitor in direct connection with Palazzo Massari and the park.

The PAC hosted this year, until July 10, the exhibition The City of Silence, a tribute to Antonioni by sixty-two artists of different generations, active in Ferrara and its territory.
