Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture joins World Heritage Site

The 43rd session ofUNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, meeting until July 10 in Baku, Azerbaijan, has decreed that Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture will be added to the list of World Heritage sites itself. There are eight buildings by the great American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (Richland Center, 1867 - Phoenix, 1959) in particular that will enrich the World Heritage Site: they are the Guggenheim in New York, the House on the Cascade (Fallingwater) in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois, the Robie House in Chicago, the Taliesin complex in Spring Green, Wisconsin, the Hollyhock House in Los Angeles, the Taliesin West complex in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the Herbert and Catherine Jacobs House in Madison, Wisconsin.

“Each of these buildings,” the citation reads, “offers innovative solutions to the needs of living, religious worship, work or leisure. Wright’s work had a major impact on the development of modern architecture in Europe.” Wright’s most important works date from the 1930s and made use of natural materials, capable of meeting the needs of the average American family in a historical period tested by the Great Depression of 1929. At the level of design, Wright was distinguished by his simple solutions based on geometric shapes, yet impressive.

For the United States, this is the 23rd site: buildings designed by the U.S. architect join such U.S. landmarks as Yellowstone Park, Everglades Park, the Statue of Liberty, Grand Canyon Park, and Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
