The Markets of Trajan shine with new light: new artistic lighting has been presented for the famous monumental complex, one of Rome’s most representative historical and architectural symbols. Located in the heart of the city, the archaeological site is thus also transformed into a scenic urban backdrop.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, Capitoline Superintendent Claudio Parisi Presicce and Acea President Barbara Marinali.
The intervention was carried out by Areti, an Acea Group company specializing in the management of public and artistic lighting in the capital. The project, the result of a synergy between Areti’s in-house technicians and the Department of Architecture of the University of Roma Tre and the Master in Lighting Design of the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” was designed to make the most of the architectural peculiarities of the ancient complex.
Prominent among the solutions adopted is the use ofprojection lighting for the external walls, which ensures a soft and homogeneous light on the various levels, creating an overall reading of the monument as an urban backdrop. Elements such as the Tower of the Militia, the niches and the inner ambulatory, on the other hand, were highlighted with a semi-radiant light, capable of highlighting their details without altering their perception.
The intervention was not limited to a simple replacement of the pre-existing installations, but involved an overall redesign of the lighting, with the enhancement of the less emphasized areas and a greater harmonization of the whole. The choice of a warm shade of light (2700 Kelvin) ensures visual continuity with the lighting of other monuments in opus latericium, helping to create an evocative environment that respects the historicity of the sites. Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art LED technologies, 259 new fixtures with a total power of about 7.5 kW were installed, replacing the previous 107 fixtures that had a total power of 11.5 kW. In addition, the intelligent control system allows the light intensity of each spot to be adjusted, further optimizing energy savings.
“It is a privilege to be able to take care of such a unique heritage in the world and, in doing so, to pay special attention to the design and the way in which light architectures can redesign these places, opting for the use of the latest generation technologies with high color rendering that allow us to enhance the architecture in its individual details and make it usable, even at night, to the eyes of the world,” said Barbara Marinali, president of Acea.
