Restoration work on the Ethnographic Collection of the National Museum of Matera begins

At the Materai National Museum, the restoration center at the former San Rocco Hospital focuses on an important conservation effort, that of the Ethnographic Collection, aimed at preserving the value of a selection of artifacts rich in history.

On the initiative of the director of the Matera National Museum, Annamaria Mauro, a conservation and restoration project has been launched that proposes to restore the state of preservation of the artifacts collected by the physician, archaeologist and scientist Domenico Ridola, (Ferrandina, 1841 - Matera, 1932) during his research in the Matera area in the early 20th century. The wooden objects of pastoral art were acquired in the 1960s by the then director of the National Museum of Matera, the current former San Rocco Hospital, Eleonora Bracco. The intervention also includes the restoration of terracotta and textiles from research conducted in Basilicata in the 1960s by anthropologist Annabella Rossi, and wooden artifacts acquired in the 1970s by the La Scaletta Cultural Circle of Matera.

The former San Rocco hospital is now the focus of an extensive restoration project aimed at preserving and restoring to their former glory a selection of artifacts steeped in history and significance. These objects, evidence of the customs and traditions of Matera and its surrounding areas, are composed of a variety of materials including textiles, organic materials, wood and ceramics. They represent tangible evidence of the rich culture and traditions woven into local history.

It will be possible to visit the restoration workshop at the premises of the Former San Rocco Hospital, where it will be possible to explore up close the techniques used to revive and restore the ancient splendor of the objects housed in the Museum.
