Rome like Pompeii: exceptional archaeological discovery during metro C excavations

Rome like Pompeii: wooden remains found (a new fact for Rome) during excavations to build Metro C.

Significant archaeological discovery in Rome as part of excavations for the Metro C line. In particular, the first intact wooden structure was found in shaft Q15 of metro C, in largo Amba Aradam. It is, in particular, some remains of a dwelling and in particular the structure of a charred wooden attic: it is the first time that such an artifact has been discovered under the soil of Rome. Along with the remains of the wooden building were also found remnants of furniture, revealing good workmanship, and animal skeletons (a dog and a smaller animal, perhaps the dog’s pet or a cat). The house was destroyed during a fire. These are finds that show similar conditions to the remains in Pompeii and should date back to the age of Trajan (2nd century AD).

“What brings this find closer to Pompeii,” said superintendent, Francesco Prosperetti, “is that we have evidence of a moment in history. The fire that stopped life in this environment allows us to imagine life at a precise moment.”
