The Fourth Estate leaves the Museo del Novecento: will return permanently to GAM in Milan

Pellizza da Volpedo's Fourth Estate will be permanently placed at GAM in Milan starting in early July, after its return from Florence.

Pellizza da Volpedo ’s The Fourth Estate by Pellizza da Volpedo is permanently leaving the Museo del Novecento in Milan, where it had been on display since December 2010, to find a new home at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in the Lombard capital. Until June 30, 2022, as planned, the famous painting will remain on display in the Salone dei Cinquecento of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, where it had been moved since May 1, 2022 on the occasion of Labor Day, and starting from the first week of July it will find its place in an ad hoc created setting in the exhibition spaces of the GAM in Milan. Here, the public will be able to admire it at a distance of six meters and without the protective glass in front; at the Museo del Novecento, the painting was instead protected by a glass case and placed in a recess at the beginning of the museum’s path.

In 1921 the Fourth Estate entered by public subscription, into the holdings of the Gallery of Modern Art, so the work will now return home, as Mayor Beppe Sala commented, "The Fourth Estatecomes home. At the Museo Novecento it fulfilled its function, which was to launch and push a new museum. Now that the Mattioli collection is being set up and the doubling in the second Arengario is being accomplished, we felt it was the right time to bring the painting back to GAM, where it will help enrich an artistic itinerary that already has important works from the same period."

At GAM, the painting will be displayed between Room 28, which houses Gaetano Previati ’s Maternity, and Room 30, which is dedicated to Giovanni Segantini. “With this operation we wanted to restore greater dignity of attendance, visit and study to a work that is among the most iconic of our civic collections,” concluded Culture Councillor Tommaso Sacchi.
