Luigi Ghirri, Italia in Miniatura and New Perspectives at Palazzo dei Musei in addition to the possibility of accessing the important archive housed at the Panizzi Library Photo Library.
With his pastel-colored portraits of the province, considered “the place par excellence” from which to observe the world, and his ability to capture the landscape, whether it be a mundane detail, architecture or a Romagna beach, Ghirri broke the codes that defined photography up to that time and created an aesthetic of the image destined to radically innovate the photographic culture of the time. Alongside this rupture, Ghirri paired a constant reflection on the image that closely intersects with his photographs.
“Luigi Ghirri continued to question the meaning of the photographic image throughout his life and did so through a prolific written production that is both a poetic statement and a diary that interrogates the present,” comments director Parisini. “In retracing the founding cores of his work, I wanted his words to be the center.”
It is Bolognese actor Stefano Accorsi who lends his voice to Ghirri’s words, which director Parisini has chiseled in an intense work of synthesis. Mixed with the photographer’s words are the testimonies of the key figures who accompanied him on the fundamental stages of his journey that guide the viewer in a true immersion in the world of the great photographer. These are those of conceptual artists Davide Benati and Franco Guerzoni, with whom, on an old car, he roamed the province, his first printer Arrigo Ghi, who initially did not understand his photography, and art historian Arturo Carlo Quintavalle. No less important are the intimate stories, such as those of his family, his anchor “to stay attached to the world,” and of musician Massimo Zamboni (CCCP, CSI), with whom the photographer collaborated.
The film is enhanced by numerous unpublished images and videos from the Eredi Ghirri archive, which he gave free access to for the making of the documentary. The images enter into a dense dialogue of cross-references with the voices of the film’s other protagonists, continuing to ask the viewer the same question the photographer has been asking all his life: what do we see when we look at a photograph?
