After three years of interventions, the restoration of Masaccio’s Trinity, among the most important masterpieces of the early Renaissance, kept in the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, has been concluded. A restoration that represents not only the material recovery of the work, but also its return to the community as a heritage of exceptional cultural, spiritual and artistic value.
To celebrate the conclusion of the work, two distinct moments were organized on April 24, designed to highlight both the institutional and cultural dimensions of the initiative: in the morning an institutional meeting during which authorities and protagonists of the project illustrated the different phases of the intervention, the methodological choices adopted and the significance of the work in its historical, artistic and spiritual context. At 9 p.m., instead, a musical event kicked off entrusted to Paolo Fresu, among the most important interpreters of the contemporary scene, who drew inspiration from the theological depth and expressive power of Masaccio’s masterpiece to create an original program, conceived especially for this occasion.
“We did a surface consolidation on the perimeter parts of the structure,” explained restorer Simone Vettori of Iconos Restauri. “Since the fresco is on a wooden support, it was moving and, constrained by the masonry, vertical lesions were created on the central part of the painting. Now the work is breathing.”
The operation was financed by the Ministry of the Interior through the Buildings of Worship Fund. “The state’s commitment is to do extraordinary maintenance, support interventions, in this case restoration, in owned churches that are cultural treasure chests,” stressed Alessandro Tortorella, prefect of the Buildings of Worship fund.
