Cerveteri, special openings of the Tomb of Reliefs: you can enter the masterpiece of Etruscan funerary art

The Cerveteri and Tarquinia Archaeological Park is holding a series of special openings to take a closer look at one of the masterpieces of Etruscan funerary art: the Tomb of Reliefs, also known as the "Beautiful Tomb."

The Archaeological Park of Cerveteri and Tarquinia (PACT) is organizing a series of extraordinary openings to admire one of the masterpieces of Etruscan funerary art: the Tomb of Reliefs, also known as the “Beautiful Tomb.” Usually in fact, visitors can only see it through transparent anti-fog glass; the extraordinary openings therefore represent an opportunity to enter this masterpiece and get to know it up close.

The visits will take place inside Cerveteri’s Banditaccia Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on nine dates between June and September 2025 (June 13, June 27, July 4, July 11, July 25, August 1, August 28, September 5, September 26), and will be included in the entrance fee.

Visitors will be accompanied by officials from the Cerveteri and Tarquinia Archaeological Park (Patrizio Fileri, Maria Cristina Tomassetti and Marina Zingarelli) who will lead them in “reading” a “room of wonders” normally closed to the public for conservation reasons.

Dated to the end of the fourth century B.C., the Tomb of Reliefs is an aristocratic burial belonging to the Matuna family, one of the most illustrious and powerful in the city of Caere. It is a unique tomb for the realism of the objects depicted in relief, made with a refined technique: elements that reproduce weapons and utensils related to the military and sacrificial spheres, as well as to the highest magisterial offices, revealing not only the high socio-political status attained by this Etruscan gens, but also the will of its most illustrious figures to leave a message of continuity and prestige for their descendants. The objects depicted are modeled in mortar and hung in an illusionistic manner with nails of extreme realism. This is a very special technique, which to date has not been found in any other funerary context of that period.

A maximum of 24 people per day may enter, in groups of 6.
Hours: 09.30 a.m. - 10.30 a.m. - 11.30 a.m. - 12.30 p.m.
Admission by reservation by writing to pa-certa.info@cultura.gov.it
