In Milan, on Via della Moscova, in the center of Largo La Foppa, a tall, over eight-foot-tall, fuchsia-colored statue appeared yesterday morning, apparently resembling a Statue of Liberty, but with the face of Vladimir Putin and with instead of a torch a gun pointed at the sky. Stains of paint also cover the entire sculpture.
The author of this statue is Enrico Dicò, a pop art artist, who later in the afternoon showed up to sign the work. This will be transferred to the artist’s temporary gallery located in the area and which opened to the public yesterday. Also on his Instagram profile, the artist posted a photo of the statue to claim its authorship.
He accompanied the post with the phrase “IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL IT’S DONE. FREEDOM IS NOT A GUN.” The first quote is from Nelson Mandela, Nobel Peace Laureate: “It always seems impossible, until it’s done,” while the second, “Freedom is not a gun,” is from the artist, to point out how too often freedom is used as a means and justification to start a war.
