Vibo Valentia is Italian Book Capital 2021

Italian Book Capital City 2021 proclaimed: it is Vibo Valentia.

Italian Book Capital 2021 is Vibo Valentia: this was announced by Culture Minister Dario Franceschini. Finalist cities were Ariano Irpino, Caltanisetta, Campobasso, Cesena, Pontremoli and Vibo Valentia, and the choice was due to the jury chaired by Romano Montroni. Vibo Valentia will then receive, through the Center for Books and Reading, a contribution of 500 thousand euros for the implementation of the project.

Established in 2020 by Minister Franceschini to promote and support reading, the first Book Capital was Brescia, or rather, the City of Chiari, among the countries most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year the proclamation, with press conference, of the Italian Book Capital took place for the first time, an idea that, according to when Franceschini said, “was born from the experience of the Italian Capital of Culture, which in turn was born from the experience of the European Capital of Culture.” He added, “We have seen that these kinds of procedures set in motion a virtuous mechanism: the identification of the local community in the competition, the planning of an overall design related to the theme, the intersection of public and private. The competition is an important moment not only for the winning city, but also for the other participants, because the virtuous mechanism produces results that remain over time and over the years even the mere fact of being nominated becomes a title.”

The city was chosen because it "stood out for the quality of the initiatives presented clearly exhibited, in which rigor and enthusiasm are blended. The basic idea in the introduction to the winning project is to bring books powerfully into people’s lives. A concept that we are sure will be translated into virtuous behavior destined to leave a lasting impression."
