Art on TV this week: mosaics, Borromini, Lascaux and lost masterpieces


From Rai Storia to Sky Arte, a week of programs between painting, architecture and archaeology. From Roman mosaics to the genius of Borromini, from the technological challenges of Lascaux to investigations of lost masterpieces, and portraits by Picasso, Hopper, Titian, and Ghirlandaio.

Rai Storia, Rai 5 and Sky Arte are offering a week full of events dedicated to the visual arts. From early Christian mosaics to the Baroque architecture of Borromini, from the digital laboratory of Lascaux to research on missing masterpieces and the great masters from Picasso to Titian.

On Rai Storia, the daily Iconologies column devotes the week to a new journey between art and architecture. On Monday, Sept. 8, from 2:05 to 2:15 p.m., the appointment is with Johannes Itten’s Art and Color. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the same time, will feature The Origins of European Hyperrealism. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 3:55 to 4:05 p.m., the gaze will shift to Rome to recount The Mosaics of the Mausoleum of Saint Constance. On Thursday, September 11, from 2:05 to 2:15 p.m., The Mystic Press will be presented. On Friday, September 12, again from 2:05 to 2:15 p.m., the episode will be devoted to The Concept of Origin in Leonardo’s Book of Paintings. Finally, on Saturday, September 13, from 1:55 to 2:05 p.m., the journey will conclude with Francesco Borromini’s Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza.

On Rai 5, Thursday, Sept. 11, from 7:30 to 8:25 p.m., will air Lascaux IV, a technological challenge, a documentary about the creation of a digital clone of the famous Lascaux caves. On Saturday, September 13, from 10:55 to 11:00 p.m., it will be the turn of Daily Iconologies, with an episode dedicated to Domenico Ghirlandaio.

On Sky Arte, the week opens on Monday, September 8, with a rich schedule. In the morning, from 08:40 to 09:10, The Photographers (S1 Ep4) airs. Next, space is given to archaeology with Art Raiders - Hunting Tomb Raiders: the first episode at 11:30 am and the second at 12:15 pm. From 1:05 to 2:20 p.m. comes Emilio Isgrò, Autocurriculum, followed by Arte Povera - Notes for History airing from 2:20 to 4:00 p.m. In the afternoon, from 5 to 6:35 p.m., space is given to the documentary The Tale of Milan. From the boroughs to the city from the city to the boroughs. Primetime, on the other hand, is devoted to The Mystery of the Lost Masterpieces: the second episode at 9:15 p.m., the sixth at 10:05 p.m. and the fifth at 11 p.m.

Tuesday night, Sept. 9, opens with two dates of The Mystery of the Lost Masterpieces (Ep2 at 00:40 and Ep6 at 01:45). In the morning the series The Photographers returns with episodes from the second season (Ep1 at 06:15 and Ep2 at 06:45) and with Ep5 from the first season at 08:10. From 5:15 to 6:40 p.m. the focus is on Lucio Amelio, while prime time features Design. Waiting for the Future from 9:15 to 11:10 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 10, the nightly programming features Design. Waiting for the Future from 00:25 to 02:15. The morning opens with Jago. The Rock Star (06:55 to 07:25), followed by Mimmo Jodice: Napoli Metafisica (07:25 to 07:55) and episode 6 of The Photographers (07:55 to 08:25). In the late morning space is given to Art Raiders - Hunting Grave Robbers (Ep3 at 10:50 and Ep4 at 11:40). In the afternoon they return Design. Waiting for the Future (1:50 p.m. - 3:40 p.m.) and Basilico - Infinity is There at the Bottom (3:40 p.m. - 4:50 p.m.).

Story of a Life and a Museum, followed by Hopper: An American Love Story (9:15 to 11:00 p.m.) and again Picasso - A Rebel in Paris (11:00 to 12:35 p.m.).

Friday, September 12, the night offers Hopper: an American love story (00:35 - 02:15). In the morning space is given to The Photographers (S2 Ep3 at 06:00 and S1 Ep8 at 07:25). At 08:35 Mannerism returns. The craziest art in the world (Ep2). Late morning continues The Nazis and Stolen Art with episodes 2 and 3 (11:20 and 12:05).
