After burning blue whale, Namibian elephant arrives in front of Milan Triennale

After the blue whale vandalized last July 14, the Namibian elephant, a monumental paper mache sculpture by Jacopo Allegrucci, arrives at the entrance of the Milan Triennale until September 2, 2025.

The monumental paper mache sculpture of theNamibian elephant by artist Jacopo Allegrucci has been placed at the entrance to the Milan Triennale and will be on view until September 2, 2025. The elephant is part of the cycle The Fragility of the Future, a series of four animals created for the 24th International Exhibition intended to make people reflect on the inequalities that mark the human relationship with the natural world and the fragility of ecological reality.

This is the second work to be presented, following the blue whale destroyed by an act of vandalism last July 14. "We welcome in front of Triennale, after the blue whale, a Namibian elephant, another endangered species. The beauty and fragility of the paper mache modeled by Jacopo Allegrucci, its call to a ’fragile future’ are the best way to invite the public to visit the great International Exhibition on Inequalities(Inequalities) that Triennale Milano is hosting," said Triennale Milano President Stefano Boeri.

The sculptures in the series-blue whale, Namibian elephant, Rothschild’s giraffe, and hippo-were designed specifically for Inequalities (running until Nov. 9, 2025) and are powerful symbols of the environmental and social rifts that threaten the Earth’s balance.

The use of paper mache, a recyclable material, becomes a metaphor for the biological and social fragility of our time. The artist deliberately resorts to a time- and weather-sensitive material to emphasize the risk of disappearance, both of the species represented and of the very balance of the planet.

After the elephant, the series will continue with the arrival of Rothschild’s giraffe, on view from Sept. 3 to Oct. 5, and will conclude with thehippo, on display from Oct. 6 to Nov. 9.
