Andy Warhol’s *The Last Supper* at the Mart in Rovereto for the exhibition on artistic references

Through November 1, 2026, the Mart in Rovereto is hosting Andy Warhol’s *The Last Supper* as part of an exhibition dedicated to artistic references. The exhibition explores the relationship between contemporary works and traditional masterpieces, spanning different eras and artistic languages.

"The Last Supper," one of Andy Warhol’s final works, created in 1987, is on display at the Mart in Rovereto through November 1. The work, on loan from Crédit Agricole Italia, has been included in the exhibition *From Painting to Painting: The Art of the Citation*, curated by Daniela Ferrari.

It is an acrylic on silkscreen transferred to canvas, measuring one meter on each side, which offers a reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Last Supper through a dual color scheme in shades of crimson and black. In creating it, Warhol did not base his work directly on Leonardo’s original, but rather on a copy of it, likely from the 18th century. Conceived during the final months of his life, *The Last Supper* revisits one of the most recurring themes in Warhol’s artistic output: the serial nature of the image as a means of reflecting on the relationship between the sacred and the profane, the original and the replica, art and mass culture.

In the exhibition layout, *The Last Supper* is positioned opposite Ai Weiwei’s *Mona Lisa Smeared in Cream* (2024). The two works are part of the “Cover” section, dedicated to artists who, from the second half of the 20th century to the present day, have reinterpreted masterpieces of art history, endowing them with new interpretations and contemporary meanings.

The exhibition aims to explore the complex web of references, allusions, and reinterpretations that characterizes modern and contemporary art, bringing together 150 works by nearly eighty artists, including Mirella Bentivoglio, Mariella Bettineschi, Felice Casorati, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, Filippo de Pisis, Andrea Facco, Flavio Favelli, Giosetta Fioroni, Omar Galliani, Renato Guttuso, Roy Lichtenstein, Piero Manzoni, Giorgio Morandi, Vik Muniz, Luigi Ontani, Giulio Paolini, David Reimondo, Mimmo Rotella, Salvo, Mario Schifano, Francesco Vezzoli, Andy Warhol, and Ai Weiwei.
