Pistoletto's Third Paradise arrives in Courmayeur, made from fir logs

New stop for Michelangelo Pistoletto's Third Paradise: the Piedmontese artist's celebrated installation now arrives in Courmayeur as well, in a version made entirely of fir tree trunks.

Michelangelo Pistoletto ’s installation dedicated to the Third Paradise was presented to the public this morning in Courmayeur (Val d’Aosta). Val Ferret, where the small town in Valle d’Aosta is located, has thus become one of the ambassadors of the cultural project with which Pistoletto, one of the most important living Italian artists, spreads a powerful symbol of peace and regeneration throughout the world.

The installation, made entirely out of local fir logs, measures 54 meters, and is designed to last at least 15 years. Pre-cut logs were used to make it, so no trees had to be cut down: the logs were placed and in some cases covered with mirrored steel discs. The work was created to inspire a transformation of society, summarizing in a single sign (two outer circles, one central circle) the complexity of the existing: from the union of the opposite poles of nature and artifice springs a liminal space full of potential, a generator of rebirth.

“The Third Paradise,” Pistoletto explains, “wants to emphasize the connection between heaven and earth and its biodiversity, as well as the sense of measure, proportion, and harmony, to be applied not only in quantitative terms but also in qualitative and ethical terms. The Third Paradise means the transition to a new level of planetary civilization, which is indispensable to ensure humankind’s survival.”

Courmayeur and Val Ferret thus become part of a network of locations that stretches from Addis Ababa to Tokyo, from Medellin to Sarajevo, passing through various Italian cities, and that through the presence of Pistoletto’s Third Paradise intends to promote harmony, sustainability and respect for the environment
