In Milan's Darsena, the floating platform by Michele De Lucchi and AMDL

For Design Week it will be possible to walk on water in Milan: in fact, The Sea Deck, the floating platform by Michele De Lucchi and AMDL for Azimut Yachts, arrives in Darsena. You will only be able to get on it barefoot. And it is all made of recyclable material.

A barefoot promenade on Milan’s Darsena . This is The Sea Deck installation, designed by AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi for Azimut Yachts on the occasion of Milan Design Week 2023. Visible until Sunday, April 23, the work tells the story of the desire to go beyond the expected and, as with the shipyard’s new Seadeck Series yachts, reconnect with nature.

Conceived as a floating promenade, The Sea Deck gives the city of Milan an unexpected experience of its ancient waterways and offers visitors a new vantage point to enjoy the water from a unique perspective near Leonardo da Vinci’s historic canal. The project aims to reintroduce the same revolution that Azimut has introduced in the nautical world by inviting people to embark on a journey to discover the technologies developed by the shipyard to reduce environmental impact and to share a moment of return to nature, the essence of navigation. This is why sustainable and recyclable materials were used in its construction, such as the flooring created with 2 million recycled and ground cork bottle caps, which will then be turned back into insulation material for the architecture.

The Sea Deck is accessed from the dock, and once “on board,” visitors will be able to stroll-strictly barefoot-along the ring suspended over the water to reach the center of the Dock; along the way, five terraces cantilevered over the water tell a journey of discovery of the shipyard’s new Seadeck Series, the first hybrid series of family motoryachts that encompasses the best of the latest technologies designed to reduce emissions and energy consumption.

Visitors will be attracted to the experience of walking on water, on cork, barefoot. A walk that, thanks to five interactive stations, turns into the story of a new series of hybrid yachts born from Azimut’s bet: to cut CO2 emissions and energy consumption. Each station tells about one of the innovative solutions adopted.

The first station reveals the heart of Seadeck’s design philosophy and green technology: from the new hybrid propulsion to on-board systems to reduce energy absorption, from the installation of solar panels to the use of recycled materials to the carbon adopted to lighten the hulls by up to 30 percent. Here, a scale model of Sea Deck 7, white in color, emits a green light that pulses inside, just like a heart powering the yacht.

Fully clad in carbon fiber, the second deck is a clear reference to this material widely used by the yard in the construction of many of its models. The Seadeck Series, in particular, was made with the highest percentage of carbon ever used by Azimut, 40 percent of the boat’s surface area. The use of carbon fiber makes it possible to reduce the weight of the boat by up to 30 percent, with a significant impact on reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Dedicated to renewable energy is the third station from which two models will be seen emerging from the water, both with a solar panel on the deckhouse: the Seadeck Series yachts will in fact be equipped with solar panels that will help recharge the latest generation battery pack allowing a zero-emission stop at anchor.

On the next terrace, one will be able to sit and rest on two cork stools designed by AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi. Instead of traditional teak, in fact, the Seadecks’ decking is made of cork, a sustainable and lightweight material that is innovative for this use; while PET, a recycled material derived from the collection of plastic bottles, will also be used to make the bulkheads. About 15,000 plastic bottles are expected to be reused for each boat produced.

Finally, the last station is a reminder of the hybrid engines in the new series: three painted propellers with an integrated light depict the Volvo hybrid powertrain that will be installed aboard the new yachts. Seadeck will be the first series in the world that, starting as early as 60 feet, will provide its owners with all the benefits of hybrid propulsion combined with onboard systems designed to reduce energy consumption along with a wide range of solutions to lower emissions.

“I am proud to present to the world, at the event par excellence dedicated to design, the Azimut Yachts revolution: boats with a green heart, the result of 20 years of research, for a new way of experiencing the sea,” says Giovanna Vitelli, president of the Azimut|Benetti Group.

“We need to change our understanding of sustainability, our mentality and our approach to nature. We designed The Sea Deck, to give visitors the opportunity to experience the relationship with the water of the Darsena and the urban space in an unexpected way, and discover a hidden nature of Milan,” says architect Michele De Lucchi.
