3D videomapping on the facades of Palazzo dei Diamanti: three days of lights and colors

From March 3 to 5, 2023, the facades of Ferrara's Palazzo dei Diamanti will shine with videomapping shows on the occasion of the major exhibition "Renaissance in Ferrara."

The rustication of Ferrara ’s Palazzo dei Diamanti will take shape and its eight thousand “diamonds” will break down light just as diamonds do, becoming a treasure chest of the expressiveness and strength of Ferrara’s Renaissance masters: from March 3 to March 5, the Este city will inaugurate videomapping shows on the facades of the famous palace as part of the major exhibition Renaissance in Ferrara. Ercole de’ Roberti and Lorenzo Costa.

The event is made possible by the collaboration between the City Council, Ferrara Tua, Ferrara Arte Foundation and Unife and is scheduled for March 3 from 8 p.m. to midnight, about every 15 minutes, and March 4 and 5 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, about every 15 minutes.

Since both facades will take shape, light and color in the same event, the best viewing location will be the corner of Corso Ercole I d’Este and Corso Biagio Rossetti (which, for the occasion, will be closed to traffic). Six video projectors will be used (and installed on the two fronting palaces Prosperi-Sacrati and Turchi di Bagno), after a preliminary work of virtual mapping in three dimensions of every single component of a palace of extraordinary complexity, due to the more than eight thousand marble blocks with pink veins.

Promoted by the Administration, in agreement with Ferrara Tua, the Ferrara Arte Foundation, the Superintendence and the University of Ferrara, the event was realized thanks to visual artists Andrea Bernabini and Sara Caliumi with music design by Davide Lavia. “It was a work of fascinating complexity, precisely because of the architecture we worked on,” explain the visual artists. “It will be a light show of particular strength,” they anticipate. "Light is the soul of our work and Palazzo dei Diamanti with its more than eight thousand ’diamonds’ on the facade allows us to create complex but incredible visual effects. The diamond is in fact a concentrator of light, its peculiarity is its ability to break it down and spread it out again, emphasizing the forms and history of architecture. The geometries of the Palace will be a treasure chest of the extraordinary quality and emotional expressiveness, of great interpreters of the Italian Renaissance such as, first and foremost, Ercole de’ Roberti and Lorenzo Costa, with Mantegna, Cosmè Tura, Nicolò dell’Arca, Marco Zoppo, Antonio da Crevalcore, Guido Mazzoni, Boccaccio Boccaccino, Francesco Francia and Perugino."

"For such an epoch-making event as the Renaissance exhibition, we worked on a special promotional project with extraordinary intensity and expressiveness. Palazzo dei Diamanti, the heart of the Addizione Erculea, will shine like a crystal, turning the spotlight on the infinite artistic wealth that the exhibition holds, with works from all over the world," said Mayor Alan Fabbri.
