Garzoni Challenge. On the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Giovanna Garzoni at Palazzo Pitti, the Baroque painter issues a challenge to artists and institutions around the world.

On the occasion of Women’s Day and the exhibition at the Uffizi Galleries dedicated to Baroque painter Giovanna Garzoni, Advancing Women Artists, with the support of the Uffizi Medici Galleries and the Medici Archive Project, are launching a major challenge in the name of women’s creativity. A call for artists and institutions around the world to create works inspired by the painter’s imagery.

From March 2 to April 8, artists and institutions interested in participating can register by filling out an online form with basic information about their planned Women’s Day event, or the medium on which they will produce their original artwork. To participate and gain access to the exhibition trailer, registration is required.

The challenge will be launched live on March 9, at the opening of the exhibition The Greatness of the Universe held at the Pitti Palace. The director of the Uffizi Galleries, Eike Schmidt, will discuss and share with the audience the concept of the Uffizi as a ’living museum’ and explain what has been accomplished in recent years to highlight women’s art. Curator Sheila Barker will give a short presentation on The Universe in a Painting in relation to Garzoni’s work, particularly the works on display. AWA director Linda Falcone will launch the challenge, with a variety of examples from the selected Italian and international artists.

Participants already include the Institute of Italian Culture of the Italian Embassy in Washington DC, The Women’s Art Library, part of the special collections and archives of Goldsmiths University of London. Also, the University of Dublin’s Foundation for Italian Studies at the Newman Theatre with UCD Alumni Relations as part of ’BetterforBalance,’ Rio Grande Valley School of Art at theUniversity of Texas at Edinburgh; De La Salle Catholic College in Cronulla, Sydney; Ludington Area Arts Center in Ludington Michigan; and the Department of Art History at Radboud University in Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
