Loving Vincent: the animated film about van Gogh arrives in Italy. Here are the dates

'Loving Vincent,' the first animated film about the life of Vincent van Gogh, is finally arriving in Italy. Here are the dates and theaters where to see it.

The Italian release dates have finally been announced for the film Loving Vincent, which will be shown in Italian theaters exclusively on October 16, 17 and 18.This is the first full-length animated film (entirely painted on canvas) about the life of Vincent van Gogh (Zundert, 1853 - Auvers-sur-Oise, 1890). The film, written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, starts with the artist’s own words and leaves it to canvas paintings, created for the occasion in van Gogh’s style, to tell the story and masterpieces of the Dutch artist. Thousands of images were purposefully created: a team of 125 artists who worked for years enabled the result. An achievement important enough for the film to win the Audience Award at the 2017 Annecy Film Festival.

The film starts in 1891, when young Armand Roulin, son of letter carrier Joseph (van Gogh’s friend), is given the task of bringing Theo van Gogh the letter announcing the disappearance of his brother Vincent. To find Theo, Armand will have to encounter characters known to Vincent and places frequented by the painter. This is an evocative tale that will keep viewers glued to their screens.

The film is distributed by Nexo Digital in collaboration with Adler and mediapartners Radio Deejay, Sky Arte HD and MyMovies.it, as part of the La grande arte al cinema project. The actor who plays the role of Vincent van Gogh is Robert Gulaczyk, but there are many actors who have given faces to characters in the film: Douglas Booth is Armand Roulin, Chris O’Dowd is Joseph Roulin, Jerome Flynn is Dr. Gachet, the doctor who treated Vincent in the last days of his life, while Saoirse Ronan is Marguerite Gachet, the doctor’s daughter, and again John Sessions is Père Tanguy, the shopkeeper who supplied the Dutch artist with colors; Eleanor Tomlison is Adeline Ravoux, the daughter of the owners of the inn where van Gogh entertained; and Helen McCrory is Louise Chevalier, Dr. Gachet’s maid. A list of theaters showing the film will be available at www.nexodigital.it.
