Museums of Rome raises public awareness of disabilities. Dec. 3 and 4 activities for all

On December 3 and 4, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Civic Museums of Rome will raise awareness of the issue.

On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, established by the UN Convention and the European Commission, the Civic Museums of Rome are offering a series of educational initiatives with a view to complete physical, sensory and cultural accessibility that involve children and adults in a multisensory experience through art and archaeology. The intent of theCapitoline Administration is to create an increasingly inclusive and welcoming city and ensure an accessible and usable heritage for all.

The initiative is part of the Superintendency’s program "Heritage in the City. To know is to participate," marked by inclusive education aimed at reducing the distance that often separates people from museum institutions and cultural heritage.
The program includes on Monday, Dec. 3 and Tuesday, Dec. 4, a series of activities implemented also thanks to the participation of associations, National Civil Service volunteers, institutions and specialized operators.

The aim is to raise awareness of accessibility among the general public with the intensification of activities now consolidated in the Sovrintendenza’s educational proposals: tactile sensory paths at the Bilotti Museum and the Gallery of Modern Art; inclusive visits to the Imperial Forums, Rome’s first archaeological area free of architectural barriers, and the Museum of the Roman Republic and Garibaldi’s memory. At Casal de Pazzi it is possible to learn about the Pleistocene without “limits” through two routes, for the deaf and the blind. In the archaeological structure of Porta Asinaria it is possible to learn about the history of Rome through a story in sign language. At the Mercati di Traiano- Museo dei Fori Imperiali in a meeting we talk about the initiatives undertaken for accessibility, understood in its various declinations and it is possible to visit the monument following an itinerary accessible also to people with motor disabilities.

The initiatives do not end with this event. The events on the calendar continue throughout the year with weekly appointments in the Civic Museums of multisensory visits as part of the “Museums to Touch” project and the possibility for deaf people to enjoy subtitled Italian Sign Language videos presenting the history and collections of several Civic Museums (Mercati di Traiano - Museo dei Fori Imperiali, Centrale Montemartini, Museo Carlo Bilotti - Aranciera di Villa Borghese, Museo Pietro Canonica, Musei di Villa Torlonia: Casino Nobile and Casina delle Civette, Napoleonic Museum, Ara Pacis Museum and Gallery of Modern Art, and to the Capitoline Museums).
