At the Parma Fairs, Mercanteinfiera, the international exhibition dedicated to antiques, modern antiques and collectibles, returns from October 1 to 9, 2022. There are as many as four collateral events in this 41st edition.

From October 1 to 9, 2022, Mercanteinfiera, the traditional event dedicated toantiques, modern antiques and collectibles, returns to Parma Fairs. After the great success of the spring edition, which recorded more than 51 thousand visitors and an ever-increasing growth of sector operators, the international exhibition proposes its fall edition with more than a thousand exhibitors from all the European antiques squares for one of the most important events in the sector on a European scale. A true antiques city spread over an area of more than 40 thousand square meters, where the various stands present their works: iconic objects of art design, vintage fashion, antique jewelry and much more.

As always, it will be an opportunity to choose from thousands of pieces of different styles, to check market trends, to discover new collecting chains, but also to indulge in a pleasant stay in the city of Parma. Mercanteinfiera caters as much to visitors looking for the curious or important but also unique purchase as it does to collectors, designers, experts and lovers of photography, and architects looking for materials from every era and style.

In addition to the exhibitors’ booths, this 41st edition also features side exhibitions: there will be as many as four.

Flashes of Genius. Alessandro Volta forerunner of sustainability

There is a growing interest among collectors for relics and testimonies even from the scientific world. This collateral is also inspired by this recent trend. The many objects on display tell the story of the visionary and abstract dream of the well-known physicist, chemist, inventor and academic from Como, Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (Como, 1745-1827), inventor of the first electric generator ever made: the battery, the best-known invention of the man who also discovered methane gas. On display are numerous rare pieces including a lithograph by publicist and illustrator Marcello Dudovich depicting a moment at the 1899 International Exhibition where Volta was celebrated. In fact, in 1799 the scientist deepened the studies of Luigi Galvani (Bologna, 1737-1798), who devoted himself to electric current for years, and gave birth to the so-called voltaic battery. Also on display were ancient specimens of the zinc and copper disc stack: it consisted of a wooden stand placed vertically on a circular base, a number of small copper and zinc discs, a cloth soaked in an acid solution consisting of water and sulfuric acid, and two copper wires. The Como Silk Museum, the Paolo Carcano Silk Factory, the Silk Factory Foundation, the Como Silk Factory Alumni Association, the Como Civic Museums, the Casartelli Museum, the Alessandro Volta Classical and Scientific High School, the Alessandro Volta Foundation, and the Teatro Sociale Palchettisti Societies of Como collaborated on the collateral.

From Drawing to Archive. Originals from the Fontana Collection.

This collateral exhibition was created in collaboration with CSAC, the Center for Studies and Archives of Communication of the University of Parma, and will be set up in Hall 7, in collaboration with Art Parma Fair. A selection of drawings among the more than 6 thousand figurines kept in the archives to document the creativity of the three famous protagonists of Italian couture: the Fontana sisters. The story begins between 1911 and 1915, when Zoe, Micol and Giovanna Fontana were born. The three began working as seamstresses at a very young age, taking up the same trade as their mother Amabile. They soon showed uncommon talents, so much so that Zoe, the eldest of the three sisters, moved to Rome in 1936 to work in the Zecca tailoring shop. Success was immediate and the big breakthrough came when diva Linda Christian chose from them the dress for her wedding to actor Tyron Power, which took place in Rome on January 28, 1949. It was such a media event that it put the sisters at the center of the international jet-set, so much so that in 1953 they were invited to the White House to represent Italy during the La Moda nel Mondo conference. In the following decades they dressed personalities such as Marella Agnelli, Jackie Kennedy, and Ava Gardner, and their work was always recognized, until they sold the brand and company to an Italian financial group in 1992.

Those daredevils of the white roads. Nuvolari, Varzi, Campari and other heroes at the Cuneo-Colle della Maddalena

After the success with the public at MIA Fair, the photographic exhibition of Swiss watchmaker Eberhard & Co. arrives in Parma. At Pavilion 4, curated by watchmaking expert Giosuè Boetto Cohen, the exhibition features a selection of images from the archives of Piedmontese photographer Adriano Scoffone (1891-1980) who immortalized the Cuneo-Colle della Maddalena automobile challenge of the 1925, 1926, 1927 and 1930 editions. The protagonists of these shots are the drivers portrayed in spectacular countersteers, escapes in the straights and skids in the dusty dirt roads.
