A collection of humanity painted by great names of the 20th century is on display at the de' Bonis Gallery in Reggio Emilia

The de' Bonis Gallery in Reggio Emilia presents through Jan. 31, 2026 the group exhibition "Humans of Art. Every Human Has a Story": a collection of humanity painted by leading names in 20th century Italian art.

Through Jan. 31, 2026, Galleria de’ Bonis in Reggio Emilia is hosting the group exhibition Humans of Art. Every Human Has a Story. Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s photographic and editorial project Humans of New York, the exhibition features a collection of painted humanity: a collection of intense and fascinating images, immediately appealing but at the same time open to multiple levels of interpretation. On display are a series of paintings depicting men and women, sometimes real portraits, more often imaginary figures capable of embodying universal emotions, moods and feelings.

The selection of artists includes leading names in 20th-century Italian art: Renato Guttuso, Antonio Ligabue, Renato Birolli, Antonio and Xavier Bueno, Sandro Chia, Franco Gentilini, Emilio Greco, Mino Maccari, Alberto Manfredi, Fausto Melotti, Ennio Morlotti, Luigi Ontani, Alberto Sughi and Mario Tozzi.

Characters from different eras and contexts emerge from the frames of the works: the Queen Bathsheba painted by Franco Gentilini, workers marked by the harshness of mine work, such as Renato Birolli’s miner, young women with delicate and mysterious faces, the protagonists of paintings by Antonio and Xavier Bueno. Then the intense self-portraits of Antonio Ligabue stand out, in which the artist’s face returns all the strength of his talent and the weight of a suffering existence. And, finally, Renato Guttuso’s figures that, even when faceless, give off a deep sensuality and truth.

“Every painted character, as well as every human being, has a story, and the artists, without words, magically manage to bring it to the surface. The public is always so fascinated by figure paintings because they mirror themselves in them, for so many different reasons-one for each painting,” said gallery owner Stanislao de’ Bonis.

The exhibition, with free admission, can be visited Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
