Of the Ethereal Sun. Giovanni Pascoli photographer is the exhibition that opened today in Barga at Palazzo Pancrazi that aims to investigate and narrate a particular aspect of the famous poet Giovanni Pascoli, namely his great passion for photography. Curated by LabFilm, Mauro Bartoli and Claudio Ballestracci, the exhibition is sponsored by the Pascoli Foundation and the City of Barga with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, and with funding from the Ministry of Culture.
Pascoli was so passionate about the technological innovations of his time that he had a Kodak bellows camera given to him as a gift. With this he took dozens and dozens of photos, punctually pasted on the personalized passepartout that read, Opus aetherii solis et Iani Nemorini (“work of the ethereal sun and Giovanni Pascoli,” hence the title of the exhibition).
The exhibition features the photographs he took mainly in domestic settings, in Castelvecchio or Messina, from landscapes to familiar faces, from peasant activities to daily life. Images that not only reveal the poet’s great curiosity for the novelties of his time, but also tell in pictures what we read in his verses.
The exhibition, which is part of the Pascoli Foundation’s project “Giovanni Pascoli narrator of the future,” is open to the public until Dec. 3, 2023, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Free admission.
