Until April 3, 2022, the Sabauda Gallery of the Royal Museums of Turin is offering an exhibition dedicated to children, Animals from A to Z, to learn the alphabet together with young visitors. The project, curated by Rosario Maria Anzalone and Enrica Pagella, is designed for elementary school children, but it is capable of speaking to adults as well, as it foregrounds the varied complexity of life on Earth, recounting it in a format never before experienced by the Turin museum complex. Everything is conceived at child’s height: including paintings, drawings, engravings, archaeological finds and decorative art objects, forty works from the Royal Museums are united by their depiction of animals.
Alongside lesser-known works, there are masterpieces such as the Holy Family with angels offering butter and honey by Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli known as the Morazzone, the bronze Taurus from the Roman city of Industria - Monteu da Po - from the first century AD, the monumental tapestry The Zebra from the Gobelins Manufacture - Etienne Claude Le Blond, Jacques Neilson and François Desportes - and Whaling in the Arctic Ocean by Abraham Storck. Also featured are some loans from the Civic Museum of Ancient Art in Palazzo Madama and the Don Bosco Museum of Natural History at the Valsalice High School in Turin. The colorful graphic alphabet, created by the hand of Turin-based illustrator Marco Vesco, enriches the exhibition spaces and finds expression in the illustrated volume Zoostorie dei Musei Reali. Animals from A to Z, the Royal Museums’ first publication designed for young children.
The chosen theme also conveys a call to responsibility, recalling the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and drawing particular attention to the issue of life on Earth. In an era defined as the Anthropocene, where the impact of environmental and climate transformations is becoming increasingly visible, the exhibition is also an original cue to reflect on the nature-culture pair and the crucial role of humans.
A new children’s space dedicated to creativity, including educational games and workshops, has also been set up next to the exhibition halls.
