Bologna, Palazzo Bentivoglio showcases photographs that Luigi Ghirri took in Giorgio Morandi's studio

The underground spaces of Palazzo Bentivoglio in Bologna are hosting, sixty years after Giorgio Morandi's death, the exhibition "Luigi Ghirri. Aterlier Morandi": on display are photographs that Ghirri took in Morandi's Via Fondazza studio.

From April 24 to June 30, 2024, the underground spaces of Palazzo Bentivoglio in Bologna will host, sixty years after Giorgio Morandi’s death, the exhibition Luigi Ghirri. Aterlier Morandi: a small selection of photographs among those that Luigi Ghirri took, between 1988 and 1990, in the artist’s studio on Via Fondazza, from the collection of Palazzo Bentivoglio and Eredi Luigi Ghirri, will be on display.

Accompanied by a text by Tommaso Pasquali, the exhibition recovers Felicissimo Giani ’s installation created by Franco Raggi, reconfiguring it, thanks to a layout designed by Davide Trabucco, to recreate Morandi’s studio environment. The overlapping gold and blue in Raggi’s installation now face each other to evoke Cimabue’s Maestà di Santa Maria dei Servi, dear to Morandi, which the artist frequented on his commute between home and the Academy of Fine Arts. The decision to use materials already used for the installation stems not only from ecological reasons, but also from the idea of suggesting an art freed from the need for novelty at all costs, which finds stimulus in the possibility of repetition, renewing itself.

The exhibition concludes with the screening of Luigi Ghirri - Anthological Exhibition 1972-1992 (2001) by Maurizio Magri and Paolo Comastri: a video that collects the words of Paola Ghirri, Gianni Celati, Arrigo Ghi, Massimo Mussini and Giorgio Messori on the work of Luigi Ghirri, with the intention of providing an evocative interpretative key to this in-depth study.

The exhibition can be visited on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Open April 24, 25 and 26.
