Caravaggesque paintings from Roberto Longhi's collection on display at the Capitoline Museums

From June 16 to September 13, 2020, the Capitoline Museums present the exhibition Il tempo di Caravaggio. Masterpieces from the Collection of Roberto Longhi.

Opening June 16 at the Capitoline Museums, at the Palazzo Caffarelli venue, is the exhibition Il tempo di Caravaggio. Masterpieces from the Collection of Roberto Longhi.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the great art historian, 2020 Caravaggio paintings belonging to his collection will be on display and visible to the public until September 13.

Roberto Longhi devoted numerous studies to the Caravaggesques, and they make up the bulk of his collection, which was formed starting with Caravaggio’s famous Ragazzo morso da un ramarro (Boy bitten by a lizard ), purchased in 1928.

Curated by Maria Cristina Bandera, scientific director of the Longhi Foundation, the exhibition presents about fifty works by the so-called Caravaggesque painters who seized Caravaggio’s legacy: paintings such as the Negation of Peter, created by Valentin de Boulogne and recently exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Louvre in Paris, and major masterpieces by artists who assimilated Merisi’s lesson, such as Jusepe de Ribera, Battistello Caracciolo, Matthias Stomer, and Giovanni Lanfranco.

The exhibition is sponsored by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita Culturale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi and is organized by Civita Mostre e Musei and Zètema Progetto Cultura.
