Coming to London's National Gallery a major exhibition dedicated to Artemisia

From April 4 to July 26, 2020, the National Gallery in London is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to the celebrated 17th-century painter Artemisia Gentileschi.

Announced back in 2018, this year the National Gallery in London will host a major exhibition dedicated to Artemisia Gentileschi (Rome, 1593 - Naples, 1653). From April 4 to July 26, 2020, the monographic Artemisia will be held at the Sainsbury Wing, serving as the first major exhibition in the United Kingdom dedicated to the celebrated seventeenth-century painter.

Artemisia has become an emblem of female art, and her works have often been interpreted according to a feminist vision. The painter painted at a time when women artists were neither considered nor accepted, so Artemisia was taken as a model for her independence and extraordinary creative force.

The exhibition will feature her most famous and iconic paintings, such as two versions of her Judith Beheading Holofernes, her self-portraits, and depictions of her heroines from the Bible and history. The latter include Susanna, Judith, Cleopatra, Lucretia and Esther.
Also on view to the public will be some of the artist’s letters that were recently discovered and are on display in the UK for the first time.

Through her masterpieces, visitors will follow the steps of the extraordinary painter from Rome to Florence, Venice, Naples and London.
These include Self-Portrait as aPainter (c. 1638-1639) from the Royal Collection Trust,Self-Portrait as a Lute Player (c. 1615-1617) from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Judith and her Handmaid (c. 1623-1625) from the Detroit Institute of Arts, and Judith Beheading Holofernes (c. 1612-1613) from the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples.

The exhibition is curated by Letizia Treves and is supported by Intesa Sanpaolo, The Thompson Family Charitable Trust, Google Arts & Culture, Sotheby’s in collaboration with J. Paul Getty Jr Charitable Trust, Katrin Henkel, Deborah Finkler and Allan Murray-Jones, Nicola Coldstream.
