Florence, graphic and photographic works of the Tomberli-Gori artist dynasty reunited in exhibition

From Nov. 3 to Nov. 30, 2022, the Exhibition Hall of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence is hosting the exhibition "Family Lexicon," which brings together graphic and black-and-white photographic works by the Tomberli-Gori art dynasty.

The Exhibition Hall of theAccademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence welcomes from November 3 to 30, 2022 the exhibition of works by Sergio and Grazia Tomberli and Benedetta Gori entitled Lessico Familiare. An exhibition with a thread not only artistic, but also parental, generational, rich in “affections and inspirations that have matured over time autonomous visions and distinct techniques.”

A collection of graphic and photographic works all in black and white brought together in an exhibition that unravels through the artistic production of a family that since the mid-twentieth century has marked, through three generations, the Florentine scene, and not only. A visual lexicon that has in drawing its deep grammatical structure and that unites, not only by bloodline, Sergio Tomberli (1913-1964), his daughter Grazia and granddaughter Benedetta Gori. A distinctive sign binds drawings and photographs, with a sober and rigorous expressiveness, evoking a past that has stimulated research that has matured over time in autonomous visions and distinct techniques.

Curated by Giovanna Giusti, former official in charge of the department of contemporary art and self-portraits at the Uffizi Gallery, the exhibition aims to build a path that opens with a selection of graphic works by the painter Sergio Tomberli, progenitor of a dynasty of artists (already honored by theAccademia delle Arti del Disegno with his appointment as an academician in the painting class and with an exhibition in 1963, which was followed by a retrospective in 2004, and gratified by prizes and awards, including the admission of one of his self-portraits to the Uffizi) whom his daughter Grazia Tomberli, an architect and painter, and his granddaughter Benedetta Gori, a photographer, have followed in their artistic vocation.

The exhibition features six works by Sergio Tomberli, seventeen by Grazia Tomberli, joined by two artist’s books, and fifteen photographs by Benedetta Gori with two videos projected within the exhibition itinerary.

Cristina Acidini, president of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, writes in this regard that "The dedication of the Tomberli-Gori family to the arts is a special value that the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, thanks to the active participation of the President’s Council and the Painting Class together with the General Secretariat, with great satisfaction highlights in this exhibition, curated by Giovanna Giusti and acutely entitled Family Lexicon." Andrea Granchi, president of the Academy’s Painting Class, adds that “the lexicon of a family transmission, particularly in the field of drawing, also emerges the sense of a substantial renewal of tools and visions in the transition, not accidental, from drawing to photography.”

Curator Giovanna Giusti notes, from a technical point of view, that “the cleanliness of the sign, which from Sergio Tomberli’s graphics moves on to the compositional clarity of his daughter’s drawings, advances in the generational dialogue with a corresponding theory of Benedetta’s photographic shots. The familiar confrontation stimulates cross-references that dynamically move on the track of the common passion of going, traveling, stopping, when personal meditations are deposited in the works.”

Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Closed Mondays.
