Gabriele Landi's geometric painting in dialogue with the historic spaces of Vôtre in Carrara

Through June 15, Vôtre's spaces in Carrara's 18th-century Palazzo Del Medico are hosting "Lieve Svanire," a solo exhibition by Gabriele Landi.

Until June 15, the spaces of Vôtre in Carrara welcome the exhibition Lieve Svanire, a solo show by Gabriele Landi (Schaerbeek, 1971), who brings to the rooms of the Apuan exhibition center a series of geometric works that are part of historical productions as well as new works. The title of the exhibition curated by Nicola Ricci, the artist himself explains, was chosen because it explains much about the spirit in which Landi works. “On the one hand,” he says, “the levity of certain situations determined mainly by the chromatic tones in close agreement with the forms that accommodate them, on the other hand the progressive fading always by means of color, but not by the work of its chromatics, this time, but by its consistency, of a series of mysterious presences that persist my paintings. I did not think of an exhibition project-I made an exposition by bringing works by trying them on site to see how their voice resonated in the space that would house them. This is how I like to work, paying attention, always with my ear outstretched to listen to the voice of the work, and to that of the space in which I am working. I am a painter, my works for me are paintings with spatial relevance the color that leaks out from the back because of the refraction of light is just a way of making the painting dialogue with the space that hosts them.”

Works that also dialogue with the historic spaces of Palazzo Del Medico, the 18th-century building that is home to Vôtre. “I have been taking notes of everything that goes through my mind on notebooks, small black ones, for more than 25 years now,” Landi further explains. “That of drawing is a daily practice that has the sole purpose of stopping ideas. I draw with what comes my way biro pen, unloaded markers, colored pencils, unlikely colors. They are never serious drawings they are notes that serve me to stop ideas, which otherwise escape me. However, I must confess that these early ideas are often betrayed or contradicted in the process. Work is made by making itself and feeds on everything it finds along its way. I not infrequently destroy work done previously in order to reuse parts of it in other work, following a kind of cannibalistic logic that often devours even me, sucking what little I manage to salvage from my meager existence on a daily basis. I need to feel besieged by work. I cannot focus my attention on a single piece, I have to work simultaneously on several things at once and bounce from duck to duck in complete freedom. It is the work itself that asks me to do this, in doing so a climate is determined, a landscape is drawn, works that are born together do not necessarily have a link to each other. The ties are determined over time and as situations change. An exhibition is an opportunity to operate an uncertain verification of some of these possibilities.”

Gabriele Landi, born in Schaerbeek, Belgium, lives and works in the province of La Spezia. He graduated in painting from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. From 1999 to 2005 he collaborated with Valeria Tognoni by conducting workshops on 20th-century art awareness, lectures and workshops. A painter and expert in art didactics, he teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. He has exhibited in various spaces in Italy and abroad.

The exhibition opens Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. For information: call +39 3384417145, email associazionevotre@gmail.com or visit www.votrespazicontemporanei.it.
