Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice announces major exhibition dedicated to Willem de Kooning

The Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice announces a major exhibition dedicated to Willem de Kooning to be held in conjunction with the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

In conjunction with the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, a major exhibition dedicated to Willem de Kooning, among the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th century, will be held at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. This was announced by the director of the Gallerie dell’Accademia Giulio Manieri Elia.

It is scheduled to open on April 16, 2024, at the opening of the Biennale, and will be on view until September 15, 2024. Curated by Gary Garrels and Mario Codognato, the exhibition will be the first to explore the impact the artist’s two Italian sojourns in 1959 and 1969 had on his work. The art he made in Italy, and the influence of Italy on his subsequent paintings, drawings and sculpture in America, has never before been fully considered. The lasting effect of these two creative periods will be revealed through an exemplary selection of works ranging from the late 1950s to the 1980s.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Willem de Kooning Foundation, a private foundation based on the artist’s legacy that fosters studies and insights into Willem de Kooning’s life and work through research, exhibitions, and educational programs.
