Georg Baselitz will be the first contemporary artist featured in a retrospective at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice

Protagonist of a major retrospective at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice in May 2019 will be German artist Georg Baselitz.

In May 2019, Georg Baselitz (Kamenz, 1938) will be the protagonist of a major exhibition at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice.

The German artist will have the honor of being the first contemporary artist to be the protagonist of a retrospective at the famous Venetian museum site: it will be a retrospective that will take visitors through the entire artistic activity of Baselitz, who has come to celebrate his 60-year career.

Paintings, drawings, and sculptures will be on display in an exhibition curated by Kosme de Barañano, who said, “Georg Baselitz is one of the most significant artists of the second part of the 20th century and tackles the great theme of painting not by reducing it to its essence but rather by attacking its convention. We are excited to collaborate together again. Baselitz has close ties to Italy, having visited it often in the past and established a studio there for some time. The exhibition will reflect the influence Italy has had on his work through the years.”

The retrospective was conceived specifically for the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice and will be held in conjunction with the 58th Venice Art Biennale.

Galleries director Paola Marini said, “After the success of Philip Guston’s exhibition in 2017, we are pleased to continue the path next year by presenting the work of a contemporary master, Georg Baselitz, whose work has been profoundly influenced by the encounter with the Italian art history present in the Galleries.”
