I love Lego, the exhibition on the most famous colorful bricks arrives at the Villa Reale in Monza

Villa Reale in Monza welcomes the exhibition I LOVE LEGO from April 29 to September 16, 2023. Dioramas, artistic creations and fantastic perspectives, meticulously reproduced scenery and environments made with more than half a million of the world's most famous bricks.

From April 29 to September 16, 2023, the Villa Reale in Monza will host I LOVE LEGO, an exhibition designed for all fans of the iconic bricks. Among spectacular and colorful dioramas, artistic creations and fantastic perspectives, in the Belvedere of the Reggia it will be possible to have fun inside meticulously reproduced scenarios and environments created in dozens of square meters with more than half a million of the world’s most famous bricks.

I LOVE LEGO presents detailed, small-scale reproductions of imaginary scenarios: from castles inspired by epic medieval battles to scenes from World War II; from the hustle and bustle of the contemporary city with its skyscrapers, old town, recreation areas and train stations to glimpses of the old town streets of typical Bavarian villages; from the conquest of space, to the evocative reproduction of a whimsical Christmas landscape full of surprises.

“This exhibition,” explains Mayor Paolo Pilotto, President of the Consortium Villa Reale and Park of Monza, “is particularly aimed at families, with no small attention to many enthusiasts, young people and adults, providing a special opportunity to visit a historical asset that for children can thus be even more interesting and accessible. In addition to the fascination of ’construction play,’ for all visitors the artistic and technical forms reproduced with the famous bricks represent a chance for creative experience and knowledge.”

“It is a lesson that abroad they learned before us,” specifies Councillor for Culture, Villa Reale and Park Arianna Bettin. “Think for example of the Miniaturmuseum in Hamburg and how it contributes to the enhancement and tourism of the Speicherstadt.”

To make the exhibition unique and to bind and enhance the Brianza area, asite-specific installation paying homage to the city and produced by Marco Montrasio of Monza is on display. In fact, excelling will be the highly ambitious project that reproduces to scale the entire Villa Reale of Monza, a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture complete with front, side wings and central court of honor, for a total of 60 thousand bricks, two meters long and one meter and 80 centimeters deep.

Through a “character hunt,” among skyscrapers and palaces, among spaceships and knights, the public is also invited to search for famous (and not) characters hidden within the installations: from Harry Potter to Darth Vader, several surprise guests included in the different installations.

Demonstrating how much the world’s most famous modules are able to “create art at 360°,” on display at the Belvedere of the Reggia di Monza will also be Stefano Bolcato’s canvases, revisitations in ’little LEGO men’ version of the biggest and most famous canvases and masterpieces of art history, from the Mona Lisa to the most current paintings of Frida Kahlo; but also the comic cartoons/installations of the LEGOlize collective, authors in 2016 of the humorous page of the same name.

The I LOVE LEGO exhibition, under the patronage of the City of Monza, is sponsored by the Reggia di Monza Consortium and is produced and organized by Piuma and Arthemisia.

The exhibition is not directly sponsored by LEGO but made possible thanks to some of the world’s greatest collectors.

The dioramas

WINTER VILLAGE.

This winter village, made in 2018 with about 62,000 pieces, is the result of a 5-year study and construction work. The landscape and buildings in this diorama are not found commercially but were created from my imagination, designed by cad and collected individual pieces around the world. The main inspiration is passion for mountains, snow and the magic of Christmas. Many details or buildings were inspired by reality and moments related to the builder’s childhood. The village was designed with the idea of creating “modules” that can be hooked together, allowing it to grow year after year. In this way it was possible to make it richer and richer with buildings, scenes and details that recreate the enchanting Christmas atmosphere of a winter mountain village. Today the village consists of 42 modules and 230 characters, many of them unusual or famous that have nothing to do with a Christmas village but help to enrich it and make it unique.

GRAND DIORAMA CITY

The Great Diorama City of 2022, with its approximately 160,000 pieces, is the ultimate expression of the city theme represented by unique and unrepeatable constructions made entirely from original bricks and using both traditional and unconventional construction techniques. Builders independently design and create their works using different inspirations and styles, using sketches, technical drawings but also assisted design software dedicated to Lego bricks. The collection of these creations is constantly being enriched by new works composed of thousands of bricks and rich in detail. The urban layout is defined using more conventional CAD software; thus, historic downtown districts, modern skyscrapers, the station and railroad tracks, green areas and recreational areas are outlined. Prominent among the exhibits is the Museum of Natural Sciences with its 19th-century architecture enclosing the most important species of the animal world; have fun finding the amusing and paradoxical skits depicted inside.

OPERATION NAKAM

This spectacular 2017 diorama reconstructs, through about 160,000 pieces, the setting of a historical event that took place in 1945 in Friuli. It depicts the revenge of the anti-Nazi brigade that sought justice in lands across the country at that time. The attention to detail and the passion with which it was made are the strengths of this unprecedented work.

DIORAMA CLASSIC SPACE

Conceived and designed in 2019 by one of the world’s largest collectors of original sets and pieces from the 1980s Lego® Classic Space series the large “Space” diorama reproduces, with about 50,000 pieces, a lunar mining settlement. In this was touristy setting, humans enlist the help of spaceships, droids and machinery to search for new resources. Its realization is in constant flux as it is enriched from time to time with new unique and unrepeatable elements created by the builder who draws inspiration not only from the original series but also from the most important science fiction film sagas.

TYROLEAN VILLAGE

This 2017 diorama is a reproduction of a Tyrolean village in about 90 thousand pieces, no particular village but inspired by the unique atmosphere in the streets of those mountainous places. Some buildings are partial reproductions of real existing buildings from the areas of South Tyrol. Designed without the aid of CAD tools, it took two years to complete due to the difficulty of finding pieces.

LARGE CASTLE DIORAMA

The Great Castle diorama was created in 2021 out of a desire to recreate the scenery of the Middle Ages. The diorama is subject to many changes over the years and evolves from year to year with the addition of new areas and buildings. Here, with its approximately 250,000 pieces, it reproduces the lakes the forests traversed by the knights, the castle of the king of the House of the Golden Lion, and the paths through the forest. Beyond the forest, where dangerous outlaws reside, stands the imposing castle of the Black Falcons, built on a mountain and fortified by high walls and towers. Inside is the sumptuous hall where the king meets visitors. Surrounding these fantastic settings are the farms where the farmers work tirelessly.

GREAT FREIGHT YARD

Trains, wagons, tracks, warehouses, all come together to form a gigantic freight yard worthy of the most accurate model railroads! Made in 2023 and composed of 15,000 pieces, it is embellished by the large central station that regulates passenger and convoy traffic. Richly detailed, it faithfully reports the daily activities of loading and unloading goods in transit; imagine the maneuvering of convoys and individual cars through the intricate circuit full of switches and dead tracks.
