In 2022 in London the first exhibition entirely devoted to Van Gogh's self-portraits

In 2022, London's Courtauld Gallery will host the first-ever exhibition dedicated to van Gogh's self-portraits from major international collections.

London ’s Courtauld Gallery will host the first-ever exhibition entirely devoted to Vincent van Gogh’s self-portraits in 2022: it will run from Feb. 3 to May 8 and will display more than fifteen self-portraits that the Dutch artist made during his prolific career.

Starting with the iconic Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, among the most celebrated works in the museum’s collection, the exhibition will bring together about half of the self-portraits van Gogh made, many of which are rarely on loan. The exhibition aims to trace the evolution of the artist’s self-representation, from his first Self-Portrait with Dark Felt Hat, made in 1886 when he was in Paris, toSelf-Portrait with a Palette, painted at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence asylum in September 1889, one of his last self-portraits before his death in 1890.Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear will be placed in dialogue with masterpieces from major international collections, including the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Art Institute of Chicago the Detroit Institute of Arts, the National Gallery in Washington DC, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and the National Gallery in London. Various works in the exhibition were last together in Van Gogh’s studio and have never been brought together, until this occasion.

The exhibition will be mounted in the new Denise Coates Exhibition Galleries on the top floor of Somerset House and will be curated by Karen Serres. An illustrated catalog with essays by international experts will also be published, presenting the new research and detailed descriptions of each of the works in the exhibition.
