In Seravezza the first Italian solo exhibition of Rachel Lee Hovnanian

From July 20 to September 15, 2019, Seravezza's Palazzo Mediceo hosts the first Italian solo exhibition of American artist Rachel Lee Hovnanian.

The Palazzo Mediceo in Seravezza hosts from July 20 to September 15, 2019 the first Italian solo exhibition of American artist Rachel Lee Hovnanian, entitled Open Secrets.

Curated by Annalisa Bugliani and organized by Pechersky Family Foundation (London) in collaboration with Galleria Poggiali and Fondazione Terre Medicee, the exhibition will trace the last decade of her artistic production. His art is a combination of painting, sculpture, interactive installations, works on paper and video art.

The exhibition aims to propose a personal artistic research on addiction to social media andsubstance abuse, such asalcohol, and the pressures of contemporary society through a female lens. Social issues highlighting the dichotomy between personal value systems and public image are then addressed, deepening her previous project, Perfect Baby Showroom.

There will be 31 works that ironically highlight thehyperconnectivity of today’s society: the Too Good to be True series, the installation Swipe Left, Swipe Right, and the monumental Beauty Queen Totem, a large marble sculpture placed on the lawn in front of the Palace with which the artist expresses the idea that our conceptions of beauty are codified as touchstones of social power. Also, the installation Dinner for Two: a long dining table with two diners seated at either end; rather than looking at each other, they spend most of their time looking on their cell phones. With the video installation C.R.E.E.P.S., the artist talks about how we offer our personal information in exchange for participating in the virtual plaza, while with the series Happy Hour, House of Empty Bottles and the sculpture Taped Shut, she expresses her dramatic personal experience as a woman who grew up in a family where the effects of addiction, in this case alcohol, were concealed by direct social pressures to offer an image of perfection.

“I conceived and created this exhibition to initiate complex dialogues about modern relationships with technology. With my works I want to challenge viewers to confront the potential future of digital communication, and the role it can play for humanity,” said the artist.

Open Secrets also features side events at other venues in Versilia: the Poggiali Gallery in Pietrasanta is showing the exhibition Silenzio until July 26 with a series of works, strictly white, that allude to the theme of whiteness and naturalness. Works by the artist will also be on view in Forte dei Marmi at the Malo Boutique and in Piazza Tonini.
