Ivrea Italian Book Capital dedicates an exhibition to Igor Mitoraj and the theme of myth

From July 21 to November 27, 2022 Ivrea dedicates an exhibition to Igor Mitoraj, on the occasion of Ivrea Italian Book Capital.

On the occasion of Ivrea Italian Book Capital, from July 21 to November 27, 2022 Ivrea will host the exhibition Mitoraj in Ivrea. Myth and Literature, dedicated to the Franco-Polish artist with strong ties to Italy, who passed away in 2014. Through two of his works, the exhibition aims to highlight myth, the meeting point between literature and art, a theme dear to Mitoraj. Indeed, his art is rooted in the classical tradition and Greek myth. Mitoraj’s works represent a link between past and future, between the passage of time and the permanence of human nature.

Ivrea will host in Ottinetti Square Ikaria grande, a 2001 work, and Hermanos, a 2010 work, both in bronze. Ikaria grande, a monumental work more than six meters high, is inspired by one of the themes the artist has been most passionate about, that of flight, which Mitoraj has explored throughout his research. Hermanos, on the other hand, addresses the theme of twins, separated but nevertheless forever united. The exhibition is curated by Costanza Casali, councillor for culture, and Luca Pizzi, ofAtelier Mitoraj.

“Hosting in Ivrea two works by Mitoraj, who is certainly better known for exhibiting in immense and open spaces such as the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento or Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, is an important challenge for our city,” said Mayor Stefano Sertoli.

"I strongly wanted this exhibition on the occasion of Ivrea Capital of the Book, choosing Piazza Ottinetti as the setting," said Costanza Casali, Councillor for Culture and curator of the exhibition, "because it is the heart of Ivrea’s knowledge, as it is home to the Library and the Civic Museum and is the place where the new library, understood in a modern key, will be built. The citizens of Ivrea and all those who will visit the city during these months will be able to enjoy a splendid open-air museum, a metaphysical stage where the monumental works will have their proper corollary and the beauty and harmony, so dear to the Maestro, will contribute not only to making Ivrea even more attractive, but also to increasing curiosity and love for culture. I also like to emphasize the relationship that bound Mitoraj to Giorgio Soavi, art director of Olivetti, of whom we are left today with some letters and the volume Il sapore di quelle bocche, an original dialogue - reflection between Soavi and the artist’s sculptures, left alone, motionless in the empty studio."

“The choice of Ivrea for this exhibition is motivated by master Mitoraj’s strong connection with myth and the classical world, which is the basis of literature,” concluded Luca Pizzi of Atelier Mitoraj. “Reflecting on this aspect in this year when Ivrea is the Italian Book Capital is certainly important, as is placing art and literature, two worlds of culture closely linked, in dialogue.”
