Josef Albers and pre-Columbian art: the new exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection

The exhibition 'Josef Albers in Mexico,' which explores the relationship between Josef Albers and pre-Columbian art, is on view from May 19 to September 3, 2018.

Dedicated to the relationship between Josef Albers (Bottrop, 1888 - New Haven, 1976) and pre-Columbian art is the new exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, on view from May 19 to September 3, 2018. The exhibition, titled Josef Albers in Mexico, coming to Venice after its first stop held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York from November 3, 2017 to April 4, 2018, features a series of paintings rarely shown to the public: iconic works from the Homage to the Square and Variant/Adobe series, as well as works on paper. However, the exhibition also displays a rich selection of photographs and photocollages, some of which have never before been shown, that were created by Albers after a visit to archaeological sites in Mexico in the early 1930s.

Through the display of letters, studies, and previously unpublished personal photographs, as well as works on loan from the collections of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, the exhibition offers the public an opportunity to learn about a little-known aspect of Albers’ work, and to focus attention on photography, thereby presenting new perspectives on the work of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

The exhibition is curated by Lauren Hinkson, an active curator at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
