Milan, at Gaggenau, Marco Paghera's exhibition on the relationship between thought and the subconscious mind

From Sept. 12 to Dec. 2024, Milan's Gaggenau hosts Marco Paghera's solo exhibition exploring the relationship between thought and subconscious through works formed from metal and stone.

From Sept. 12 to Dec. 2024, Gaggenau in Milan will host Marco Paghera ’s solo exhibition entitled Pensum, which explores the relationship between thought and subconscious through works selected by curator Sabino Maria Frassà. The spaces of the renowned German design brand will host the young artist from Brescia, known for his ability to combine metal and stone to give shape and color to the complexity of his interiority. For Paghera, in fact, the most precious raw material is the subconscious, since human existence is a constantly evolving intersection between reason and instinct. The rare stones, such as Calacatta Viola andOnyx, used in his works represent the starting point, an irrepressible impulse of the subconscious. Their workmanship and the careful choice of color to be applied to the metal transform the “background” into a powerful carrier of meaning. The term “pensum” comes from Latin and originally indicated a “weight” of precious matter still unformed, to be evaluated and worked. And so, at the end of the visit, we hope each viewer will leave the exhibition with the words of William Shakespeare “To be or not to be, that is the dilemma. Is it nobler to suffer, in the depths of one’s spirit, the stones and darts of outrageous fortune, or to take up arms against a sea of affliction, and, fighting, end it?”

“His ever-evolving word-thought-weight interprets the many facets of human existence, composing a harmony of contradictions that represent our Shakespearean ”Being.“ An existence that not only deserves to be understood and accepted, but also told, to the point of being transformed into a work of art. After all, the work of art is us, our essence.”

“Art,” explains curator Sabino Maria Frassà, “is above all being able to shape, cherish and share a thought. Paghera’s art is not only conceptual expression, but becomes a form and material of a new thought. A thought as pure as it is heavy, irreversible and capable of transforming everything it encounters. This creative process represents for the artist a return to order from inner chaos, a path of catharsis and self-analysis that is indispensable in order not to be dominated by the subconscious, but to emerge from it enriched.”

“Gaggenau, also through this exhibition, is a promoter of matter being transformed into art and pure beauty through human genius. Paghera’s work embodies and shares with us this quest for perfection that enriches our daily lives, managing to give body and matter to the invisibility of thought so disruptive and revolutionary.” “Stone, a symbol of the depths of the earth and a metaphor for the human subconscious,” Frassà continues, "pervades all of Paghera’s artistic research. The artist combines traditional and industrial techniques to combine nature and human ingenuity in a process that reflects an attempt to understand thought as a bridge between the subconscious and consciousness. This path is expressed in works such as Cerebral Introspections, Absences, Archaeologies of the Future and Memory Box," explains Mistral Accorsi, brand manager of the German brand Gaggenau.

Notes on the artist

Marco Paghera was born in Montichiari on June 23, 1980. After graduating from Liceo Artistico Olivieri, he landed in the family business that has been dealing with special metalwork for decades; here he found the necessary condition of momentum to begin his first experiments in the field of sculpture. A passion for material contaminations can be found in his works: he combines and mixes metal, the element that most represents him, with color, inserts in marble, velvet, wood and other materials. 2013 is the breakthrough year and the artist begins to mature the transition from large dynamic sculptures, such as the monumental Beyond, to geometric cerebral Introspections. Focusing his research on the successful cycle of works “Cerebral Introspections” for which he abandons figuration in favor of abstraction. Exhibited in Italy in numerous solo and group exhibitions, he won theParatissima - Hit Parade Prize in 2016, while he was a finalist for the Premio Arte in 2018 and the ARTEAM CUP in 2019.
