Milan: human skin-bound treatise on display at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana from today

From now until June 18 at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana it will be possible to see the 19th-century human skin-bound Treatise.

Opening today, May 18, in Milan, at the Federiciana Hall of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, the exhibition Emozioni a pelle will display the Traité d’anatomie descriptive, physiologique et pittoresque à l’usage des artistes, published in 1861 by Belgian physician Henri van Holsbeek (1829 - 1879). The uniqueness of the volume lies in the fact that it was bound in female human skin: the use of binding books in human skin, known as anthropodermic bibliopegy, although not as widespread, was sometimes practiced between the 17th and 19th centuries, and the book on display in Milan represents a rare specimen bearing witness to this custom.

The exhibition, organized to celebrate International Museum Day, promoted by ICOM - International Council of Museums, will run until June 18, 2017. Tickets: Federiciana Hall only, 7 euros; Federiciana Hall + Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, 15 euros; Federiciana Hall + Crypt of the San Sepolcro and Roman Forum: 16 euros. Guided tours 12 euros by reservation only (at www.labibliotecadelcardinale.it. Info 02 806921 or email contatti@ambrosiana.it
