Post-Futurist cinema of the 1930s is on display at Casa Depero in Rovereto

From April 13 to October 20, 2019, the Casa d'Arte Depero in Rovereto is hosting the exhibition Come un film. Post-Futurist Cinema of the 1930s.

The exhibition program of the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero in Rovereto (Trento) is enriched with a new chapter dedicated to the language of cinema: it is the exhibition Come un film. Post-Futurist Cinema of the 1930s, on view until October 20, 2019. The protagonist is the figure of Emanuele Caracciolo (Tripoli, 1912 - Rome, 1944), director and representative of the Neapolitan Futurist Group, whose activity is documented in the Fortunato Depero fund kept in the Mart’s Archivio del ’900. Although the Futurists looked at cinema with curiosity and interest, the productions of the 1910s and 1920s are not numerous and have been largely dispersed. In the 1930s, with the advent of sound and the birth of Cinecittà, Italian cinema experienced new production phases whose events can instead be reconstructed.

Through a selection of photographs, letters, books and magazines, the exhibition delves into some exemplary cases shedding new light on Depero’s projects and contacts with the world of cinema. Enriching the itinerary are a documentary filmed by Walter Caprara and excerpts from some particularly significant films: Anton Giulio Bragaglia’s Thaïs, the only futurist specimen that has come down to the present day; Caracciolo’s Troppo tardi t’ho conosciuta, a lost film rediscovered in 2003; and Carmine Gallone’s Marionette, a mainstay of popular cinema at least until the 1950s.

The exhibition Like a Film. Post-Futurist Cinema of the 1930s is curated by Nicoletta Boschiero and Federico Zanoner. For all information you can visit the Mart’s official website.
