Rome, Cy Twombly's lifelong snapshots on display at Gagosian

From Oct. 30 to Nov. 13, 2021, the Gagosian Gallery in Rome presents Souvenirs of Time, shots Cy Twombly took over nearly sixty years in the United States and Italy of his studios and private spaces.

The Gagosian Gallery in Rome is hosting the exhibition Souvenirs of Time from October 30 to November 13, 2021, featuring photographs by Cy Twombly (Lexington, 1928 - Rome, 2011). Throughout his long career, the artist dedicated shots to his studios, private spaces and classical sculptures. These are images that chronicle the pivotal places in Twombly’s life and work over some 60 years in the United States and Italy.

Since the 1950s he devoted himself to photography, even as a student at Black Mountain College, North Carolina, continuing until his passing in 2011. His shots capture moments of his daily life and subjects that interested him: they are photographs that show an affinity for the Pictorialism of Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz, particularly with regard to the emphasis on soft focus, minute detail and thoughtful composition. In his early days Twombly used black-and-white film, later capturing vivid hues with a Polaroid camera, enlarging some images through a special process of color dry printing.

The exhibition brings together shots the artist took of the interiors of his studios from the 1950s through the 2000s: from his studio on Fulton Street in New York in 1950 to his Italian studios in Rome, Bassano in Teverina and Gaeta, and in Lexington, Virginia. These images show his paintings and sculptures in situ and in various stages of creation, offering an in-depth view of his creative process. Other photographs depict private interiors and details of classical sculptures, showing views of the spaces and forms that inspired him.
