Soon in London the first exhibition of works created by humanoid robot artist

London's Design Museum will soon present the first exhibition featuring works created by humanoid robot artist Ai-Da.

Coming soon to London’s Design Museum is the first exhibition of works created by arobot artist, Ai-Da. The humanoid robot makes self-portraits usingartificial intelligence, and the London museum venue will host its works to open up questions about human identity and creativity.

Ai-Da is the brainchild of Oxford art gallery owner Aidan Meller and curator Lucy Seal; it was created in 2019 by Engineered Arts, Oxford University researchers who developed the algorithms, and Leeds University engineers who made the robotic limbs. It owes its name to pioneer Ada Lovelace, an English scientist and mathematician who lived in the 1800s. Lovelace is considered almost the world’s first computer programmer, as among her best-known works is the one on Charles Babbage’s analytical machine: she discovered an algorithm that is believed to be the first one capable of being processed by a machine.

On the occasion of Ai-Da Self Portraits, this is the title of the exhibition, the humanoid will exhibit a selection of his self-portraits, in particular three large-scale works that he created thanks to algorithms: looking at himself in the mirror, he translated the stimuli perceived by the vision of his reflection into graphic signs. He has cameras in his eyes and his hand, while looking in the mirror, is guided by artificial intelligence and computer vision programs: this is how he creates his self-portraits.
