The link between Sicily and the Flemings told in an exhibition in Palermo's Royal Palace

From March 28 to May 28, 2018, the Royal Palace of Palermo is hosting the exhibition Sicilies, Flemish Painting: Flemish Works in Sicilian Collections.

How much Flemish painting is present in Sicily?

From March 28 to May 28, 2018 in the Sale Duca di Montalto of the Royal Palace in Palermo fifty-two works will be on display for the exhibition"Sicilië, Flemish Painting," in which visitors will see for the first time a large collection of Flemish paintings from Sicilian public and private collections.

The exhibition itinerary unfolds through two themes: works found in Sicily that can be traced back to collecting and artistic patronage, and artists of Flemish and Dutch origin, active from the mid-sixteenth century onward and embedded in the socio-historical fabric. The works on display will encompass the period from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century.

Among the main masterpieces featured are Jan Gossaert’s Malvagna Triptych, Jan Provoost’s Deposition, Van Dyck ’s Madonna and Child from the Chiaramonte Bordonaro collection, and the Crucifixion by the same artist, Simone de Wobreck’s Circumcision.

The absolute star, unveiled after 32 years, is the St. Catherine of Alexandria by an unknown Flemish painter, as the central part of the triptych of which the work is a part is missing and therefore it is impossible to trace the author with certainty.

The exhibition is curated by Vincenzo Abbate, Gaetano Bongiovanni and Maddalena De Luca and is sponsored by the Fondazione Federico II and the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity.

Hours: Monday to Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 5:40 p.m., Sunday and holidays from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Special closure at 9 p.m. April 22 to 25, April 28 to 30, May 1, June 2-3.

Tickets: Full 6 euros, reduced 3 euros for children aged 14 to 17. Free for children up to 13 years old.
