Turin, impossible exhibition on Leonardo arrives at Vinovo Castle, with works reproduced in 1:1 scale

The Castello della Rovere in Vinovo, in the province of Turin, is hosting Leonardo, an impossible exhibition, an immersive digital reconstruction of Leonardo’s entire pictorial production that runs from Feb. 1 to April 26.

The works on display, in chronological order, are twenty-six in all and are created from a very high-definition matrix, then digitized, calibrated in brightness and chromaticity values on a homogeneous, transparent and backlit support, will be exhibited in the rooms of the Castello della Rovere in a context that intends to give further value to the works of the great artist. The works are presented in their original dimensions, including theLast Supper (8.80 x 4.60 m).

This digital exhibition stems from the desire to bring all the greatest works together in one location, an unattainable desire due to the distance of the museums that preserve them and the growing, albeit understandable, unwillingness of their directors to lend them out, but also due to the exorbitant costs of insurance and special security measures, which are unavoidable for paintings of incalculable value. And, of course, by problems related to conservation.

The project is curated by journalist and philosopher Renato Parascandolo. The very rich multimedia captioning apparatus was compiled by the recently deceased art historian Ferdinando Bologna, and is easily accessible on one’s smartphones by connecting to the exhibition’s wifi (it is recommended to bring earphones).
