Valerio Berruti brings his Nina's Joust to MAXXI in Rome.

Entitled La giostra di Nina (Nina’s merry-go-round ), Valerio Berruti ’s (Alba, 1977) film project is composed of some 3,000 hand-drawn drawings that are joined in sequence to become frames of a video, housed in the MAXXI Museum’s video gallery.

The protagonists of Berruti’s tale are Nina, a small carny forced to work by her sullen grandfather, and Geppo, a big boy with a childlike soul who wreaks havoc among the patrons of the village carousel. Nina’s Joust, instead of classic horses is composed of little birds, a symbol of everyday life and freedom, flanked by protagonists destined to take flight.

The short film’s monumental sculpture, with a diameter of 7 meters, is on public display in the museum’s lobby, allowing everyone to admire it, listen to the soundtrack composed by Ludovico Einaudi, and get on the carousel completing the work with active participation. Because, as Berruti explains in the documentary that tells the backstage story, “I wanted to create a sculpture that would house the children, not just represent them. The children are part of this work, like in a collective performance.”
