Venice, a major exhibition on Henri Cartier-Bresson curated by five art personalities at Palazzo Grassi

From July 11, 2020 to January 10, 2021, Palazzo Grassi in Venice is hosting the exhibition Henri Cartier-Bresson. Le Grand Jeu, a major, never-before-seen retrospective on Henri Cartier-Bresson (Chanteloup-en-Brie, 1908 - L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, 2004) organized with the Bibliothèque nationale de France and in collaboration with the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson. The exhibition, conceived and coordinated by Matthieu Humery, aims to bring together the gaze of five different curators on Cartier-Bresson’s work and in particular on the so-called Master Collection, a selection of 385 images that the artist identified in the early 1970s, at the invitation of his collector friends Jean and Dominique de Menil, as the most significant of his oeuvre.

They are five contemporary art personalities: photographer Annie Leibovitz, filmmaker Wim Wenders, writer Javier Cercas, conservator and director of the Prints and Photography department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France Sylvie Aubenas, and collector François Pinault. They were each asked to choose about fifty images from the original Master Collection, of which there are five examples.

With their own selection, the five curators share their personal vision of photography, and of the work of this Cartier-Bresson, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. The goal (as well as the challenge) of the Palazzo Grassi exhibition is to renew and enrich our view of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work through that of five different personalities.

In spring, in 2021, the exhibition will leave Venice and move to the Bibliothèque nationale de France. All info is available on the Palazzo Grassi website.
