The MANN National Archaeological Museum in Naples is making use of sensors for environmental monitoring as part of the MANN in Colours and EcoValors scientific projects, initiated by director Paolo Giulierini. The temperature of the statues in the Farnese Collection will thus be detected: a project whose scientific partners are the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the University of Perugia, with the support of the Institute of Cultural Heritage Sciences of the CNR.

Sensors that detect the concentration of pollutants on site and a volumetric air intake sampler have been installed in five spaces of the museum. The small box sucks in ten liters of air per minute, then through a Petri dish, the scientist identifies fungal spores in an environment. Through the interweaving of the data, it will be possible to understand which risks are coming from outside the building (acids and nitrogen oxides from road pollution) and which are coming from inside. In case the experts identify limit values, containment measures will be taken, especially for proper air circulation. Temperature surveys are done with FLIR thermal imaging camera, which identifies hot and cold areas and thus possible micro-cracks, where water and pollutants could creep in.
