From October, tours of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park's construction sites return

Starting October 2, Close Up Cantieri is back: visitors can access the construction sites of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park.

Back for the third year in a row at the Herculaneum Archaeological Park is the event that brings visitors closer to the behind-the-scenes work of the operators, Close Up Cantieri.

On Fridays in October, November and December, visitors can share the latest developments and results of maintenance and restoration work with the special guidance of restorers, archaeologists and architects. This is an event that has proven over the past editions to be very popular with the Park’s public.

This year Close up Cantieri presents a true full immersion in the life of the archaeological site, letting visitors enter the ongoing construction sites and talk to the officials who are in charge of managing the intervention projects. In fact, it will be the latter who will accompany the public and explain the daily activities required for the care, maintenance and restoration of the archaeological area.

It will start on Friday, October 2, with three rounds: 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m., for groups of up to 10 visitors. The activity will also be supported by Ales staff. Then it will continue on Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30, Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27, and Dec. 4, 11 and 18.

Each week, visitors will be guided through the construction sites underway and spread throughout the site-a way to discover together the Park’s archaeological heritage as a living organism in constant activity and to experience as protagonists the behind-the-scenes work in progress at the Park.

Visits will take place in full compliance with anti-Covid 19 safety regulations. Reservations will be made in the ticket office area, where visitors will find from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. a Park official who will take reservations while availability lasts.

"The successful Friday morning Close-Up Cantieri appointments are renewed, a project that intends to give continuity to the initiative already implemented in 2018 and 2019, which gave us a really positive feedback from the public," commented director Francesco Sirano."Close-Up Cantieri is a program of public inclusion and participation in the activities of restoration and maintenance of the exceptional archaeological heritage of the ancient city, and our main intention is to raise awareness among tourists toward the conservation issues of a complex archaeological site such as Herculaneum, stimulating them in the direction of an increasingly conscious and participatory enjoyment."
